==================================================================== 'Dark Step in Gray' ( GreyStep) by errol 'errol_t' thompson December 1999 Theme for Darkstep ver 0.914 (for 800x600 & 1024x768) e-mail : ethompson@idatas.co.za ==================================================================== This is a complete install, for New users, and experienced, as there is as yet no definite way to release a theme.(It's coming!) This theme has been tested on my home stand-alone machine with Win98. It is my current desktop.I like it, and I hope you do too. New Darkstep user's should follow this installation guide for an easy install. 1. Installation (New User) Unzip Greystep.zip to C:\Darkstep ***** 1024x768 Users only!. Please read this! The theme default is 800x600. To change it to your res., and for the shortcuts,etc to show in the right places: 1) Rename/delete the file step.rc in the Darkstep dir. and rename the file step1024.rc to read step.rc. 2) For Chronos, the date/time, to show in the right place, open modules.ini and edit the x number under Chronos from 574 to 798. Just insert a ; in front of 574 and delete the ; in front of 798. Save. Then proceed. 3) Open l-ement.ini in the l-ement dir, and under [positions] MainPos, delete the ; for 315,etc and put a ; by MainPos 200,etc. 4) Use the wallpaper Darkstp1024.bmp for the right effect, in the images dir. SORRY!!! :((( But on a 14' monitor my eyes bleed at 1024x768! :) That's all you have to do extra/instead. The rest everyone has to do! ;) Choice! (a) Use the included separate program Litespawn which enables you to swap back to explorer, give each user their own shell on log-in, etc. To use Litespawn, unzip litespawnv1_80.zip in the Litestep dir., to c:\litespawn and run the file litespawn.exe. This will install litespawn as your shell. You can then read the text file in litespawn directory to configure litespawn. OR (b) Open the "Run" dialog and type system.ini. Find the line "Shell=c:\windows\explorer.exe". Change this to read "Shell=c:\darkstep\darkstep.exe" and save file. Reboot, and you are now running Darkstep! BUT, you will have to edit/save again to get back to explorer shell! (Told you to use Litespawn!) (c) NT only. Read the Darkstep.txt in the Darkstep dir for installing under NT. (Darkstep User) Back-up/Rename your existing Darkstep dir., or at least your current step.rc, and unzip to c:\Darkstep, and recycle. You know the rest. If you want to just copy the greystep dir. to your themes dir., make sure that you have the same Darkstep modules (check the dates), in your DS dir as those in the zip. WARNING! This theme is set-up for c:\darkstep. If you unzip to e.g. d:/Darkstep, you MUST first edit the file step.rc in your darkstep directory BEFORE a Reboot or Recycle! Failure to do this will result in a blank screen! See Configuring GreyStep below. 2. Configuring Grey Step To have this theme work with your programs, you have to edit the file step.rc in your Darkstep directory, so that everything points to where your programs are. What's a step.rc? It is simply a text program which Darkstep reads on start up to see what modules it must load, where the shortcuts must go on the screen, and the path to the programs. How do I edit it? Open step.rc in notepad, and scroll down the sections. Check that everything points to where YOUR programs are. e.g. you may have winamp under d:\music\winamp\winamp.exe. Edit the programs to point to your paths, and save. How do you open notepad to edit step.rc? IF you are doing this in Darkstep, click on desktop, 'edit step.rc' is listed there in the popup menu, and on the shortcut bar on the right. Otherwise, open explorer (the file manager), just hold down shift, right click on step.rc, and choose 'open with notepad'. Dont forget to save your changes! If you edited in Darkstep, you must recycle Darkstep for changes to take effect. Recycle is on the click menu, and on right hand shortcut bar. 3. Wallpaper The wallpaper is in the Darkstep\Themes\greystep\images directory as Darkstpimage.bmp. Open display properties, select and apply.(NB, for 1024x768 users it is Darkstp1024.bmp) 4. Miscellaneous System meters...click on top meter icon to show/hide meters. (L-ement skin by 'Jalist' ['Bignose]) Winamp..........(Winamp program is not included) 5. Troubleshooting 1.
