Listed below you will find not only the download(s) for DarkStep, but a wide variety of other useful freeware.  There are also a few shareware applications listed that we have found to be nice add-ons to *any* shell; even if you chose to stick with the Explorer shell!  Feel free to browse and download to your hearts content :)

What's New?

Internal changes to improve compatability and enable functionality with the new DSDesktop module (version 2.0, available below)...

Installation Instructions:

NOTE:  If you have an existing installation of DarkStep you will need to either
  • Backup your step.rc file, so that you can restore it *after* unzipping the upgrade as instructed below, OR
  • Unzip the upgrade to a temporary directory, then move everything *but* the included step.rc file to your DarkStep directory.
  • Download and unzip to C:\DarkStep (otherwise you will have to manually edit the appropriate section(s) of the step.rc file to reflect the correct path of your DarkStep installation).
  • Edit your system.ini file (to be found in the Windows root directory; usually C:\windows) [boot] section to point to the new installation of the DarkStep.exe (i.e. “shell=C:\DarkStep\DarkStep.exe”)
  • Save the changes to the system.ini file, then reboot your machine to start using DarkStep!
PLEASE NOTE!:
Boolean Variables are those lines in the step.rc files which are used to configure various aspects of the LiteStep shell and its individual modules.  ALL of these variables MUST be specified by including “=1”, “=0”, “=yes” or “=no” immediately following the command for use with DarkStep!
In LiteStep these same variables are enabled (=1 or =yes) by simply adding them to the step.rc and disabled (=0 or =no) by either removing the line or by adding a semi-colon (;) to the immediate left of the line.

EXAMPLE:

LiteStep step.rc -			LiteStep Section, DS step.rc -

AutoHide or				AutoHide=1 or
;AutoHide				AutoHide=on
					AutoHide=0 or
					Autohide=off
Note that this pertains to *single-word* commands: Commands that specify a parameter (i.e. a screen placement, color, font, etc.) remain the same between the two shells.

DSDesktop v2.0 With Source Code!

Here's an update to the *native* DarkStep desktop module that Fahim has written specifically for the the shell and its compatability with LiteStep...

What's New:
  • Added the binding of !bang commands to mouse single and double clicks
  • Added middle mouse button emulation for !bang binding if you press both mouse keys together
  • Added the creation of a shortcut in the desktop folder for any file(s) dragged to the deskop

New Module Release From Jugg !!!

Jugg has been keeping himself busy since leaving the LiteStep Dev Team!  He's been updating his modules like crazy, so here's the most recent build (0.84) of his tasks.dll :)

LSXCommand 1.7.9 is now compatable with DarkStep.  Visigoth has hammered out the changes necessary to make his excellent LSXCommand module fully functional with DarkStep; so those of you who can't live without you LSXCommand(!) can now survive while using DarkStep <he, he>

Icon3D -

This is a new and excellent replacement for the Windows Start menu, or anything else on your hard drive(s) that you may want fast access to :)  Very easily installed and configured; you just click-and-drag your applications from Windows Explorer (or whatever file manager you may use) and a shortcut is automatically created!  While we do not distribute Icon3D directly, you can just visit the home site to download this great little application...
